Tim,
I've created a few AVI files and run into the same problem. What I did is compress the AVI files using RLE compression. I used SnagIt to create the AVIs, but had to switch to 16 colors in order to have access to RLE compression. Using this technique, you should be able to convert your AVI files so that they can be played with the MS Animation control.
