I don't know about theoretical limitation, but I would find it extremely impractical to use a ComboBox even for much smaller datasets.
For this purpose, we use a PickField, a combined object, where the user can either type a code (if he knows it) or click on a button and select from a grid with incremental search (if he doesn't).
