Sometimes a small change will require hours of work. You never know what you might break - like reports, and additional functionality. Often it is better to leave things alone. Just treat it like a minefield - avoid it! Well, that is my approach but then I do not know what your requirements are. One of my requirements is to "never change anything that works". Exceptions? Well, I have to be paid to make such changes - I will not do it for "cosmetic purposes". :)
