Not normal at all. Do you have a second COM port you can try this on? If the COM port is functioning correctly, you should get an immediate response -- test print to the receipt printer. And it would work every time. You might check the dip switch settings. Just remove the metal cover on the bottom of the printer. YOu should be able to find the default settings in the guide that came with the printer.
