Now for those of you who do not know what a "Juerga" is, there are two types and I would like to point out the difference. The original Juerga – pronounced who-er-gah meant a flamenco bash where people got drunk and lasted for days without stop. The second one is a concert in a theater, which involves professional flamenco artists as well as teachers and students. Our Juerga is the latter type and very civilized. At our Juerga last December we had professionals from Spain, and I opened the show with a Soleares.
I will be playing a Farruca which is a piece of music that was originally invented for male dancers. It was created in Galicia in Northern Spain and at one time was used to determine who the “King of the Gypsies” would be. It is a hard driving and lively rhythm and I will play a version similar to one I played for a well known flamenco dancer some years ago.
Galicia is an interesting area as the Irish lived there many years ago before migrating to Ireland and Scotland. They took with them the bagpipe and the bagpipe is still used today in the folk music of Galicia. By the way the bagpipe of Scotland is better developed than the one used in Ireland and Galicia. Do not tell anyone I said that! :)
