I may be totaly off here cause I've never done it, but from what I've heard about it, there is a Tools and Settings wizard or something like that, that you can run on Windows 2000/9x and come up with a file to put on a network. After a clean install of XP you can import in all these settings and be back in business. Maybe that covers your extension setting.
Of course, we all know that in the next version of Windows, all these settings will be associated with your .NET passport, so if you sit down at my computer, even though you've never touched it in your life, you'll be able to get all your settings, desktop, sounds, and even wall paper to look like it does on your machine. Theoritically of course ;-)
