Nadya;

To be politically correct one should not use the term “their”. It does not represent male or female and is therefore neutral. Disregard that most words in the English language have no masculine or feminine ending. The word “their” has been singled out as a special case. Other languages have masculine and feminine endings, which relate to something other than sex. In the United States sex is a topic we cannot discuss. It can lead to civil action in court. Blowing up the world and killing people by any fathomable method is acceptable in the United States. Just do not discuss sex!

Now to be correct use his/her in place of “their”. Then the “politically correct police” will be happy. At least they will be happy until they find a new word to “protect from misuse”!

Unfortunately, I like the use of the word “their” to show ownership and not have any gender tied to it. We have so many hang ups in this country that the use of any word ending in “man” or “men” is suspect and if not already prohibited will surely soon be. No more Mailmen to deliver the mail. It must be a Mailperson. Congressmen – congressperson. Too bad Americans do not understand the meaning of gender and its use in language. Our hang-ups are showing and the rest of the world laughs!

By the way I saw a position advertised in San Francisco (business section) that had the following included at the bottom. M/F/G/L/H which translates to: Male, Female, Gay, Lesbian, Handicapped. I am sure in the future additional species of humans will be discovered and defined in the manner they deserve. So my feeling is that the simple word “their” will someday include M/F/G/L/H and much more. Gee things were so much simpler just a few decades ago! :)
