BTW, I found the problem with COMTOOLS and my Win 2K computer. The com port was being used by another application. Once I found this and disabled the other app, COMTOOLS worked fine.

It looks like the tool from http://www.marshallsoft.com/wsc4fp.htm would also do what I want at about 1/3 the cost of Comtools.
