Using PO, I get about a 2x speed difference. It does make sense that SPT would be faster than a SP because you are just executing a simple [usually] SQL command against the database versus execution of a procedure, creating the cursor and returning that cursor to the client. This test was returning 1 record from a 47,000 record table based on the KeyID. My times were 0.05 seconds for SPT and 0.09 seconds via the package.
