You can't at runtime, not really. You have to create a method in the container and call it from the Paint method of the form. The code in the form must be added when a developer adds the container.

You mentioned the timer in your first message. What I meant is that there's nothing wrong in offering this timer to detect focus changes, but it shouldn't be required. If someone is willing to add the single line of code to all controls in the container, they don't need a timer. In other words, there should be an option to turn the timer off.
