Hi,
It me again. I would like to use RAS to connect to customers. In NT 4.0 when I set up RAS it present me with a dialog requesting I select a modem or a direct serial connection. It also asks if RAS should be outgoing, incoming or both. I usually select both. Then I can call anyone at a telephone number that has a modem connected to both that telephone line and a computer running RAS. The modem answer the phone an initial the login session.
There should be some way to combine the simplicity and security of RAS with the speed of cable modems or dsl modems. This should be built into the operating system itself. It should be possible to make a RAS connection to anyone on the internet that has a static IP address with a registrar representing the InterNIC, essentially the same requirements necessary to have a web site. Im running a web site on a dedicated linux box. I have a static IP address through Cox Communications. My router forwards everything coming in to my network directed to port 80 to my linux web server. Essentially everything else coming in is block by my router's firewall. It would be nice if I could forward anything coming into my router to a port used for RAS to my window NT 4.0 server and have it initial a RAS connection. I do not think this is currently possible in window NT 4.0. I hope this would become possible in future releases of Windows.
