IMNSHO, there is no way to do it. I usually guess that the index is corrupted when users start getting weird results (for instance, a query fetches two records where one is expected - and the query used to work). I then re-create the index. If the problem is thus solved, the index was the culprit. Otherwise, I have to continue debugging.
