We've just started using Ping/X from Mabry (www.mabry.com). It is an Active/X control that you can drop on your form. It has a mode that doesn't force you to wait for the ping to finish - there is a Done event that fires when the ping either completes successfully or fails. If you specify a hostname instead of an IP address (www.microsoft.com, for example), the IP address lookup WILL force your program to wait. They have another control, Host/X I think, that will perform the lookup without forcing you to wait. I haven't used this, since we always have an IP address.
