I don't know what's wrong with your first issue, but re getting a combo box onto a grid:

Edit the column that you want the combo box on. Click the combo box tool and drop it onto the column. Then you'll have 2 controls, the text box and the combo box, in the column. Go to the properties of the column and change the CurrentControl to be the name of the combo box. If you want, you can delete the text box by choosing it in the properties window, then clicking somewhere on the outside of the form (to get the focus to the form and not the properties window, but still on the text box), and pressing the Delete button.
