Some bar codes require start and stop characters. For example, if you want to create a readable bar code of the number 12345, you must print *12345* or !12345! in the bar code font.

Also be sure your reader can read the code. Biscuits, monitor etc. are likely UPC or EAN but commonly used non-commercial bar codes are Code39, Codabar, etc.

You will also need to use a laser printer, as ink jets and dot matrix are not good for this task. Start with a medium font "weight" if available and use a font size that gives you a height similar to a commercial UPC bar code.
