It now takes about 20 minutes for VFP/VSS to cycle through the project list on the VSS server machine; it used to take just a few minutes. Also, some of our client machines also take close to the 20 minutes to do the get for the entire project, while other client machines take as little as 8 minutes. We have tried archiving the project and removing the old versions.

Further information, that certainly seems odd:

When I run the Win2000 task manager while doing the "get latest", it shows CPU usage at only a few percent, varying from 3% to maybe 15% for short periods. It shows VFP7 memory usage at around 50Mb.

I ran the same test on another machine with the same amount of memory as the VSS server machine, 256Mb. CPU usage was way up there, on the order of 85-90% or more, memory usage vaired from 22 to 30Mb ... and the get latest for the same project took 45 seconds instead of 20 minutes.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing such widely disparate results?
