I have to agree. I typically need to resolve a problem and get the update out NOW. I don't have the luxury of spending time researching through books, etc., but I don't want to just fix the problem, I want to know how to avoid it the next time or resolve the same situation the next time so I always go back (nights and weekends) and do the research. I cut and paste and study code all the time. I used to be in a larger IT shop which was great for sharing ideas and resolutions, but now there are only two of us and after surfing through tons of my own code for examples of stuff I did before but haven't done in sometime so I've forgotten the 'trick' I hop online do a search, and if nothing pops up that resolves it, I post. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO grateful to all the developers that share their knowledge online and try to do the same whenever/if I can. That's why I pay for the membership to the UT.

I think the book would be a great resource, and I for one, would definitely buy it. I would even invest in the tool if he decided to develop a really great tool. Most of this I have to purchase myself, but it is worth it. That won't stop me from searching for a quick resolution when time is short and the boss is breathing down your neck and you know that given the time, you could figure it out yourself eventually or find the answer in a book, but I will study the book and refer to it whenever I need to. Every book I have purchased on development/languages I have studied cover to cover. If only my memory was as good as my desire to learn I would remember it all when I need it!

>>>I think that yours is the best weigh in that I have read so far. It does need to be a hybrid of solutions and nitty-gritty. I want to solve a problem now but afterwards I want to study why and how so I can do something similar the next time.
>>>Time...it's a premium item isn't it. From reading the threads here I get the feeling that there are others like myself, part of a 1 or 2 person IT department that has to develop, deploy, and maintain a wide variety of software, hardware, telecom, and provide user support. I need solutions but want to learn as well. If only there were 30 hours in a day....

>>Do you really want to spend all this time on programming? I am going to play "IL-2 Sturmovik" flight simulator tonight... :)

>Actually I need to shoot some of my new work and rework my online gallery. It's a shamble. Got a 1951 B.F. Avery farm tractor waiting for me to get back to restoring it, and my wife keeps asking when am I going to finish her ceramics studio. I take my nose out of he keyboard occasionally. :-\
