Mike,

>>The particular 'sword' Jesus was referring to in this case was the kinds of divisions that would occur between those who love and follow Him and those who do not. IOW, it will cross all boundaries.

>Thats the interperation I've seen too. Its still laughable. I still haven't found the magic rule that tells me what parts of the bible shoudl be taken literally, and what parts you need to make up in order to make sense.

Well, that "magic rule" is actually very very simple; just read it and take it on face value. What you do not understand do some research on with an open mind. More often than not you'll find a very interesting anser that has its roots in cultural differences or the subtleties of language translations. Too many people and groups try and force the Bible to fit their preconceived notions, often with absolutely ridiculous results and that's just plain wrong and dumb IMO. Just read it and take it on face value. There are enough answers for your questions and I doubt you'll ever ask an original question (no offense <s>).

However, if reading the Bible doesn't lead you to a personal relationship with the God of the Universe you're not approaching it correctly. It'a all about a one-to-one relationship. You and God. Me and God.
Best,
