Hi James,
I -- and many of us here -- have done well with Foxpro & VFP but learned other languages first, and on the side. Foxpro is a somewhat odd language. It has a lot of power built in, so you can develop a powerful & useful application pretty quickly. However, it shields the learner from picking up some programming basics. Especially -- for database programming -- it is possible when using Foxpro to avoid SQL. But most of us would agree that knowledge of SQL is vital to a secure future in database programming...
Anyhow, if there's a job ready to be done, go ahead and give Foxpro a shot. But if he's just now learning, it might be best to learn how to integrate a lower generation language with a database toolkit first. After learning the basic concepts of database programming and object oriented programming -- in any language -- Foxpro is a cynch.
Meanwhile, if your son already programs pretty well -- there's good money in Foxpro, and it's good fun to boot.
Cheers,
Adam
