When VFP 3.0 came out I had a 100 Mhz machine, and when VFP 5.0 was released I put it on a 200 Mhz machine. I never again turned on VFP 3.0. My machines got faster with each release of VFP - it has been my reason to upgrade hardware. :)

Visual Studio 97 was slower than Visual Studio 6.0 but then I was using a 200 Mhz machine for VS 97 and a 1.7 Ghz machine for VS 6.0 - so it is more than subjective at my location!
