Are you sure you know what you are talking about? I use PVCS Version Manager that is written in Java... there is NO browser involved. It runs in a Win32 java machine and is just like any other Win32 ap. The UI is rich with tree views, pop-up windows, etc.

Granted, as you say, it is up to the JVM to talk to the underlying OS, but it still can be totally standalone .EXE disconnected from the browser or the web.

I think Java' biggest hurtle was that Sun never really wanted to make it a standard. They kept saying they would, but they never did, and they still control all the specifications and 'standards' for the language. I think they had 'not-invented-here' syndrome.
