VB is based on BASIC, a language that was widely in use during the 70s on mainframes, minis, and NON-PC micros.

Then BASIC was given away free with almost every PC computer purchased up until the mid-late 80s. IF memory serves, GW and MS PC based basic got their feet wet to help out those poor souls unable to bootleg the IBM basic PC-ROMS for their clones. <g>

In a way you could think of VB rising to the top of the BASIC heap as VFP rose to the top of the DBASE/XBASE heap. Of course the odds are still stacked against VFP pardon the pun.
