Mark and Caroline,
many thanks for your help. Sorry it took so long to respond but it was a rough week.

Mark, I tried your code and it came close but because of the complexity of the grid I decided to use a 1 byte bold character field and toggle between Y and – in the column. User his enter or space and the valid toggles the value between Y and -. If user his Y or N that value is used. The users really took to it too. Using - in place of N makes the column really easy to read.

Caroline, I will remember your suggestion. In fact, I have a place I can use it now. I have a grid where I am using an edit box for a two line part number/description and the grid lines are transparent above and below the box. If I put the shape behind it in gray the lines will not look so bad.
