I think you have to use quotes. At least the other issue (in reply to yours) is solved that way: SET HELP TO ("c:\forehelp backups\bravo! helpfile.hlp") works just fine.
What -d parameter are you talking about, anyway? The startup -d is for the .dll to use:
-Dfile Specifies a runtime .DLL file (including path if necessary) other than the default. Using this switch allows you to try different versions of the runtime DLL, for example, different releases.
