OK, I did that. Cleaned the registry as far as I dared (all references to VFP except a few file assocations, same for Visual Studio).
I also turn off all services I can, IIS, virus protection, etc. -- everything that will allow itself to be unloaded on a running copy of 2000 server. When it fails, the install log just shows an error 1603 after trying to start the "install.exe" it has extracted after all the preliminary checks. There are no "critical" failures logged in all the checking.
