The problem is with the font used in the edit box; you character used is substituted when the character is unmapped, or in your case, the action intended by the character is not valid in the edit box as defined. I'm fairly certain that if you examine the string character by character, you'll find these are carriage return and newline charaters; since the box is limited to display in a single row, wrap and multi-line behaviors areprobably suppressed.
