It sounds like Java just outright did not deliver as a rich client. This is surprising considering the vast resources put behind it by Sun, IBM, Oracle, etc. You would think that placing a non-MS rich client on the workstation would be priority #1 for these guys. Oh well, I guess that's why I'm a developer and not a businessman.
