Doug, this is the way it has generally worked. Though the other case may actually be more common:
1) I attack you.
2) You fight back.
3) I win.
4) You lose.
5) I keep what I win.
In either case it generally does not lead to 50+ years of hatred and bloodshed.
So what is different about Palestine?
I think there is one prime difference. Generally the residents of the conquered territory are incorporated into the conquering state. For example: Texas or Alsace-Lorraine.
Why has this not happened with the Palestinians refugees?
Because Jews would no longer constitute a majority in Israel!
What is the only acceptable solution from the (right-wing) Israeli point of view? Make the Palestinians go somewhere else. [See Deir Yessin.]
I've just started thinking about this so I'm open to learning more facts.
