Jerry, did CTRL-ALT-BS not work? CTRL-ALT-F2 to get to a virtual console and gun the process? I am keenly interested in any case of a program that actually brings down an entire box.

The SuSE manuals are outstanding, worth the price of the set alone.

Well, even 12 in 1 week is excessive, so something nasty is in there.
Since X-mas I've taken my $90 SuSE CD and put it onto the company-owned laptop plus the 5 home computers. With the exception of the single dual-boot machine, the house is now entirely Linux. I may shell out $300 for vmware so I can get rid of that dual-boot, and with Remote X, I can then run Windows 2000 on any machine in the house.
Three of these machines were gathering dust, as they are P166, and I can't put Win2k on them, which is the only Win I'll run. But that $90.00 you mention bought back three machines.
Then there was the completely free LRP fits-on-a-floppy-runs-on-a-486 firewall. Nice.
BTW: this isn't very nice, but I've heard MSCE=Must Consult Someone Experienced.
