I usually never put more than 10 items into a combo box because along with being unstable it is also a little unweildly.

For anything over 10 items, I give them a list box because they get an open frame immediately where they can start pressing for a first character search.

For anything with less than 4, I usually give them an option group.

So the Combo Box gets that range in between. <s>
