If you are running a select to recreate the cursor from the cbo, then what's happening is you are ripping the cursor out from under the grid, all of the columns of the grid are removed and then once the cursor is populated the grid rebuilds itself using baseclass controls using all the default sizes etc.
The best way to deal with this is to use a parameterized view as the recourdsource. There's an example of this over on my website.
