The issue isn't an additional server, it's more bandwidth on the inbound/outbound line. You're going to be at least an order (or two) of magnitude slower than an equivalent LAN link - the server has squat to do with it, unless you're talking about running Terminal Server, in which case, the fractional T1 is probably adequate bandwidth to run a number of terminal sessions. We have had good results with Win2K AS and TS over VPN, using .5Mbps SDSL, with the SonicWall Soho+10 VPN/Router/Firewall device with 5-10 simultaneous users running a VFP7 app remotely. We use a Dell 1400 server with .75GB RAM and dual PIII/933s for the TS box, which cost well under $5K 6 months ago.
