What's the reason you need consecutive numbers with no gaps among them? If we know what your goal is we may be able to suggest a work-around.

I recall one developer who had salesmen on the road who assigned each one a group of numbers to use in any records he added while disconnected from the main database. Then they synchronized when they got back to the main office and no one had problems with duplicate keys.
