We use RVs all the time against SQL Server. We've not seen this issue.
Suggestion:
If you are using the View Designer:
Set the view's "SQL Where clause includes " property on the update tab to "Key Fields only"
- or -
On the fields tab, hit the Properties button and set the default value for the date field to .NULL.
