THX-1138 was the first 'major' movie by George Lucas - pretty dull, but since it was the first, he puts references to it in his other movies.

Funny thing, I remember Luke being hailed by the 'THX-1138' as you say the first year the movie was out (Star Wars - A New Hope), but they changed it later... or did they? Heck, I even remember Biggs being in the Hangar with Luke before they leave for the final fight scene over the Death Star (Biggs dies in the final run down the trench). Yet they removed the Biggs scene later.... changes, changes...
