>Why FreeBSD instead of Linux if I might ask? I'm just tickled pink with the performance of Linux on my second server right now, I'm curious what advantage BSD might have over besides the copyright issues (I don't plan on selling it so I don't care about copy right, left, or otherwise).
I've never used BSD but from what I've gathered in various groups over the years it seems that BSD doesn't have, or didn't used to have, as many upgrade cycles and they really hammered their kernel before it was released for production use. So, their biggest claim to fame is SERVER stablity, with many having uptimes in excess of 400 days.
But, there are several versions of the "little deamon":
http://www.bsdmall.com The BSDMall sells the most popular versions, which are:
http://www.freebsd.org/http://www.openbsd.org/ (which claims four years without a remote hole in a default install)
http://www.netbsd.org/What I really don't appreciate is the fact that the BSD license allows the big boys to rip off the work of the small developer without returning anything to the community at all. Ergo, Microsoft, for example, can put BSD Ftp into their kernel and the Free Software movement gets nothing in return except exploitation.
Apple bases the Mac OS X on Darwin, and the Open Source version is based on BSD !! I understand that Apple returns back to the community by contributing to Darwin.
