whats the format of the xp drive, ntfs?
if it's ntfs look in the "config.nt" I believe in xp, in the bottom of the file make sure the "files" = 'Files=99', it might be giving you a erroneous error because the files might be going over the max.

thats my best guess, it doesn't mean it's right, it's just a good guess
