Title:
Speed Test with VFP 7.0 and FPW 2.6 On a Network
Dear All:
We setup the following two network conditions:
Servers: WIN NT and a WIN2000 Server with same configuration as above except with 256Meg Ram running the same Norton configuration.
Desktops: WIN2000 Desktops 1.5 mHz with 256mg Ram running desktop client of Norton Enterprise Security with Server turned off and DBF, CDX and FPT excluded.
Software Program Execution: Read a table containing information about 80 table aliases and indexes. Then measure the difference in time between VFP 7.0 and FPW2.6 in reading each record in the table and then opening the underlying 40 tables with the appropriate Aliases and Indexes.
Results:
FPW 2.6 - 1 minute 52 seconds
VFP 7.0 - 4 seconds
Using Novell server 4.12 (without the Norton's) and Win98 work stations the timing was approximately 25 seconds with 2.6 and about the same with VFP.
Moral of the story - no registry hacks for optmistic locking will solve this problem (thanks Ed Rauh) - man is it time to upgrade all applications running FPW 2.6 outside of the Novell v4.12 world!
