Nadya, the answer to all questions of this type is to show the boss how the investment in a better computer, more recent OS (less time lost to crashes), and more recent version of your development tools will SAVE them money. For example, if the computer builds an EXE 10 times faster and you go from 3 minutes to .3 minutes, and are testing at the rate of 10 builds per day, and your salary is $20/hour, a year's worth of builds with the older computer is __ $ of your salary and with a newer computer is __ of your salary. BUT, you don't cost them $20/hour - by the time they pay for your office space, telephone, benefits, etc. it's about double that. Be sure to factor in the time spent opening everything back up after the whole machine crashes.

Then think of how much faster you can work if you have intellisense and don't have to look stuff up. Do some math for this one too.

Any manager who doesn't respond to this type of cost/benefit presentation is nuts!
