Aside from COMMTOOLS, there is also COMMX from Greenleaf Software (www.greenleafsoftware.com). It doesn't have quite as many features as COMMTOOLS, but it is reliable, efficient, and considerably cheaper. I've used it for some pretty complicated communications applications.
