Some years ago I had a similar problem of stripping out data from a large 15,000+ line text file. After experimenting with APPEND FROM and Low-Level I/O (FGETS and FPUTS) I choose the lowlevel I/O to create a smaller subset of the main file for processing. As part of the processing some data when into different files based on values in certain parts of the line.
