I was pretty obvious Joe Bob was a joke ( "Yo dog" ???) - though you'll probably admit pretty much not a funny one.
Straightening it out as you did was undoubtedly the adult thing to do. I would guess no harm done (except for poor Michel who probably had to field a blizzard of demands to twit filter this guy) as I'm pretty sure people like Walter aren't going to get too shook up by pot shots from a "Joe Bob" (though non-native speakers probably don't get the joke built into the name)
