I agree people should do what they find interesting and rewarding and should define interesting and rewarding in whatever way works for them.

No, I simply meant learning anything new that MS declares is the future is probably not a bad idea, as I think everyone agrees. As to how soon etc - hey, it depends on how happy you are doing what you're doing and how well you're doing at it.

But there seem to be an amazing number of people here that think their livelihood depends on some mystical sea-change at MS that is going to cause them to market Fox aggressively to the world at large. Never gonna happen. So what.

If you're looking for a job, follow the buzz-words. If you want to make money, become an independant consultant with something to offer besides writing code. Use the tools you're good at, but most important, get good at finding the right clients.

Personally, I have no desire for "a job" - that's why I'm in this business - and and not much worried about my financial future as a business consultant. I find VFP works pretty well for me and I don't plan to depend on .NET to make any money for quite a while. That said, like you I'm starting to get familiar with .NET and especially to watch for opportunities to leverage other people's hard knocks and sliding on the bleeding edge to make a buck or two when the time comes.

I just think the "arguements" we see here between the giants about .NET don't really differ so much in their positions as they represent on-going ego wars. I am a CO in that one. You *all* know more about programming than I do.

But remember what Burt said about hustling pool ... < s >

>What you are "bored" with can still make you money. Its hardly relevant to the serious and personal decision that developers should be considering.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
