I've had a similar problem, I've created the HTML with MSWord2K and exported it to HTML.
Word adds a lot of uncommon stuff and uses not a other type of pictures the HTH expects. (Have a look add the html code, you will see)
The solution was to get a tool "HTML Filter" or so from Microsoft. This cleans unneeded tags and get the pictures right. To my sorrow I can't give you the link, because it was to long ago. I have only the german one here. Try to search "Tag remove office html" at Microsfoft's pages.
