Well, my one application does download only data transfer from an AS400 using ODBC and it's pretty tight. Originally it wasn't - the MIS people set up the ODBC access with full permissions to any table in any database on the 400 side. Took them a couple of weeks to realize this, then they turned it off until the IBM rep showed them the proper way. Now the ODBC connection can only access a limited set of read-only views that they created with the data I need. So if you only need to read data from the AS400, the MIS department is really on thin ice if they are using 'security' as their only reason to not help you.
I guess if you want a really secure method you could go with the old-fashioned 'screen-scraper' type of thing - parse the data from the actual AS400 terminal session screen.
