Modem7 surely has the tenacity to survive the JVP's of the world. John's a nice guy who just needs to think he's able to construct such a compelling argument that everyone will agree with him. I think he forgets that old adage about catching more bees with honey than vinegar. <s> IMO it's really not a technical deficiency in him (or Steve Black for that matter) but the personality flaws that we all have but in their case causes them to do what they do.
BTW.. I started then too. Well, actually, I had a neighbor who had one of his ham radio buddies send me a message on his teletype. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! Send me a message from somwhere else in the world!?!?! Wow!!! <g> And ring the bell too??!!?? LOL!!
