Automakers, wireless providers and electronics manufacturers are desperate to find the "killer app" of dashboard computing, but most brainstorm sessions have been washouts.

Here's an easy one, how about interfacing to My .NET Services? How about, when you get into the car, it knows by your key (or some other UI) where you like your seat, steering wheel and mirrors, it knows what set of presets to use on the radio, and how cool to make car. Plus, it knows what kindof driver you are and how the auto should react to your commands.

Here's another easier one, this one, a little bit easier. You get up in the morning, while you're watching yourself shave in teh bathroom mirror, the partial LCD touch screen in the mirror knows what you want to see in the morning. It knows you want to see Headlines from your favorite news sites, email from work and home, plus UT replies and wikis topics. While you shave or whatever you simply tap each item that is of some interest to you and you go on your way. Then you hop in your car on your way to work, and every item that you highlighted while you were shaving know is read to you during your daily commute. Something of particular interest while you're stuck in rush hour? You get to see the videos and other rich content in the dash of your car.

Maybe the reason these people can't find a killer app is because they assume that applications in cars need to be related to the car in any way. I don't know about you, but when I'm stuck in an automobile, I'd rather not think about the vehicle more than I have to.

In fact, I'd rather have the opposite. I'd rather be sitting in my office looking at my schedule and have my car access my schedule... and maybe even suggest when my next oil change should be, and when would be a good time to do it (eg: I have a meeting down on 53rd street that shoudl last an hour, I can drop it off then at quickee lube which is a block away, if I confirm, it automatically makes the appointment).
