I've discussed this with MS Field Reps. They will market what gives them the biggest commission check.

I would bet that MS field offices are evaluated on how they can sell and assist customers on implementing solutions in .NET. MS has staked quite a bit on the effort. It would make little sense to buck that trend in favor of a product that had little market share prior to .NET being released. If there is a fall back position, it most likely rests with VB.
