Actually, its not. Having faith (or having a "confident belief in the truth") is only detrimental to science.
I understand at some point it is impossible to know for sure or completly understand a concpet, and in those cases, its best to go with the theories that are currently estabilished. But those are called theories for a reason. Not beliefs.
Agreeing with a theory and having a belief are very different things. For example, if you have this theory that the earth is flat, and all of a sudden someone comes around, and says the earth is round, and proves it, you can simnply throw your theory out the window.
Faith on the other hand, is much more complex than that. If you truly believe something, and it turns out to be false, your entire world will cave in. Even Jesus said if someone says you are wrong, you need to persevere. Thats called running on faith. Thats called living a lie. That is the exact opposite of what science demands.
