I would say: Abandon this idea, it's too complicated to implement. I saw some class on vfug.org couple of years ago, which allows to show progress bar while indexing. Usually it could be done by set status bar on, set talk on, set odometer to 100 or by having some UDF in FOR clause and then remove this using low-level functions...
